Off-Balance
November 13, 2006 · Mustapha Hamoui

The Syrian/Iranian axis is throwing everything it can find at the Seniora government.

It’s obvious Assad and Ahmadinajad are freaking out; the cabinet session to endorse The U.N. Tribunal draft came so soon they had to abandon all cold-headed planning and meticulous refining. The Tribunal has got to stop! even if their allies have to take their masks off.
Their original plan had gone awfully wrong. They thought they had eight ministers that could resign on order, but the honorable Charles Rizk and Elias el Murr refused to let their consciences down. Now, with Lahhoud’s Minister Sarraf resigning, they only got six.
To make up for their failure, Iran and Syria are whipping out every single tentacle they can muster in Lebanon: Lahhoud statements, Hezbollah resignations, Al-Quaeda threats, Al-Diar fluff, even the worthless Wi2am wahhab had to weigh in to salvage his bosses’ scalps. They are all coming together in a last-ditch effort to create the impression that there’s a public revulsion against “American lackey” Seniora…
There’s a problem however: The plans are so crude they didn’t get enough time to mature. The Pro-Syrian camp has shown its real face by coming across as dead-set on stopping the court. This has single-handedly uncovered their smoke-screen of a “guaranteeing third” demands, and lost what is left of Lebanese trust. Alqaeda had warned only a few months ago against Hezbollah, now somehow they’re in the same battle. The Aounists are also off balance. They are sending mixed signals and they are very reluctant to take to the streets. Even Berri softened his stand (from, of all places, Teheran!)
To quote my friend Abu-Kais: Let the battle for Lebanon begin!
