False Witnesses As a Few Bad Apples

August 22, 2010 · Mustapha Hamoui

Elias Zughbi argues that we shouldn’t let a few bad apples (if any) delegitimize the special tribunal for Lebanon. He especially cautions against falling for the incessant campaigns that want to equate the STL with some alleged “false witnesses” (My translation. Hover for Arabic)

It is said that there’s almost 400 witnesses. Are they all infiltrators, spies and forgers? And who is to say that the prosecutor is not relying on hundreds of other testimonies and troves of incriminating evidence, recordings, documents and other proofs, like confessions? And who can confirm that he [prosecutor Bellmare] will rely on the testimonies of those who are being relentlessly portrayed in the media as dark demons of conspiracy?

I should note that the author does not concede that “false witnesses” exist. He portrays them as a fabrication designed to scuttle the STL. If you can read Arabic, do check the original piece.
