Blocking The STL’s Funding Won’t Work

October 5, 2010 · Mustapha Hamoui

Lebanese, French and Saudi politicians have been saying this for weeks, but now it came straight from the UN:

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s spokesperson Martin Nesirky stressed that the Special Tribunal for Lebanon was moving forward regardless of whether Lebanon will approve or disapprove Court funding.

I don’t think the intend of the opposition in blocking the funding was sabotaging the tribunal as much as it is a symbolic/political position of principle. I mean really, do you really expect that a tribunal which is supported by the Hariri family and the Saudi government will run out of cash?

This is why I don’t think a big fuss should be made out of voting for the STL’s funding. Even if it didn’t go through, just stay calm and carry on.
