Hariri Will Not Drop The International Tribunal

October 18, 2010 · Mustapha Hamoui

Tariq Alhomayed, the editor in chief of Alsharq Alawsat and can be counted on to communicate the official Saudi line on regional matters. If you had any suspicions that the Saudis want to sacrifice the Hariri Tribunal at the altar of its rapprochement with Syria, his latest article will make things clearer.

3 reasons why the tribunal should stay

According to Alhomayed they are:

  • There has always been a threat of “civil strife” but that never stopped the Lebanese from asking for the tribunal
  • Only the rule of law and justice can protect unarmed people like Mr. Hariri
  • Hariri the father tried the road of concession but they killed him anyway. His son won’t repeat his mistake.

To me the last argument is the most convincing. In this part of the world, any form of concession will portray you as a weakling, one that can be assassinated in a heartbeat. This is why I was pissed when Mr. Hariri took Syria off the hook in such a public and humiliating way.

PS: The Americans too want you to know the the Tribunal will go on.
