The “Justice and Reconciliation Initiative” Has Landed

December 8, 2010 · Mustapha Hamoui

The ‘peaceful resistance’ intellectuals have gathered and came out with a political manifesto which is meant to “to consolidate stability in the country” after an indictment is made.

The document contains a lot of inscrutable gibberish (“the conferees suggest forming a framework for action and communication — Justice and Reconciliation Gathering — which aims to enable the Lebanese society of shouldering its responsibilities at this crucial moment”) and fluff (The Lebanese feel that they are no longer the masters of their fate, which is being decided nowadays, without their participation, in talks between the region’s nations).

It also manages to squeeze in political compromise (“the rule of justice targets individuals and not the confessional groups they belong to, not to mention the fact that there are neither ‘innocent sects’ nor ‘guilty’ ones in Lebanon”)

But to me the question is: Who is this aimed at? Is it an exercise in propaganda to independents? (Too transparent). Is it a call to rally the supportive masses? (Too academic). Is it a practical plan for response to a potential unrest (not by a long shot). What is it?

What has really changed after that large gathering of people?
