If The Tunisian Regime Falls, It Will Be Because Of One Man

December 29, 2010 · Mustapha Hamoui

Brian Whitaker:

The riots and demonstrations that have swept through Tunisia during the past 10 days […] began with a small incident. Twenty-six-year-old Mohamed Bouazizi, living in the provincial town of Sidi Bouzid, had a university degree but no work. To earn some money he took to selling fruit and vegetables in the street without a licence. When the authorities stopped him and confiscated his produce, he was so angry that he set himself on fire.

One can only admire such acts of courage, but setting yourself on fire? In any other day, I would have called him a fool, but Mohamed Bouazizi is the man who should take credit of what’s happening in Tunisia.
