Is Open Source Software Right For Lebanon?

December 30, 2010 · Mustapha Hamoui

There’s a movement to promote the use of free open source software in the Lebanese government. The idea is that this will help cut costs for the cash-strapped government.

I was about to write that open source is not user-friendly and that it is only suitable for geeks, that linux seems to be from a different planet, and that I uninstalled openoffice.org 2 days after installing it. I was about to say that the Lebanese government would make a huge mistake if it signed on to this.

But then I remembered that I use Wordpress (a free, open source publishing platform) for this blog and that I love it, and that if Lebanese newspapers also used wordpress they would save thousands of dollars and give us better websites.
