Tripoli Is Boiling
January 24, 2011 · Mustapha Hamoui
I’m getting first hand news from family and friends that Tripoli (A Sunni Stronghold) is getting furious at the news that Mr. Hariri will not be the next PM. People attempting to hang photos of Mr. Mikati are beaten, roads are being shut and people are taking to the streets in fury.
I am yet to find anyone in Tripoli who supports Mr. Mikati. Even those who were always against Mr. Hariri are telling me that this is no longer about Mr. Hariri, that this is about the entire Sunni sect being forced out by the Shiaas’ guns. There’s a special sense of unfairness that the Shiaas made a big deal out of the constitutionality of a government with no “proper” shiaa representation, that they got to impose Nabih Berri despite the fact that they didn’t have the majority back then.
My personal gripe is that my house is right next to that of Mr. Miqati’s, which means that now my family will have to endure the security measures reserved for VIPs who are very unpopular.
