Obama’s Next Step On Egypt

February 3, 2011 · Mustapha Hamoui

Mark Lynch argues for a final push:

It’s time to meet escalation with escalation and lay out, in private and public, that the Egyptian military now faces a clear and painful choice: push Mubarak out now and begin a meaningful transition, or else face international isolation and a major rupture with the United States.

Mr. Lynch is apparently not aware of the ‘Netenyahu scenario’, as explained by Juan Cole:

Mubarak’s slap in the face of President Obama will not be punished and it is nothing new. It shows again American toothlessness and weakness in the Middle East, and will encourage the enemies of the US to treat it with similar disdain. [..] Mubarak is taking his cues for impudence from the far rightwing government of Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, which began the Middle Eastern custom of humiliating President Barack Obama with impunity.

In my opinion there is already pressure on the Egyptian army by the Americans. This explains the army’s apparent indecisiveness. But the deal is not sealed yet.
