Now Lebanon Wants The Government To Give Us Faster Internet
February 21, 2011 · Mustapha Hamoui
I just saw this article at Now Lebanon reacting to the fact that we are now the country with the world’s slowest internet connection. They’re basically making the case that if Lebanon wants to attract more investment and have more growth, we need good internet.
But in my opinion, even that doesn’t go far enough. This is not only about investments, growth and business. This is about a complete change in how people think, how they consume information and media, how they communicate and exercise governance, activism and politics. People everywhere are leaving books for e-books, CDs and DVDs for digital downloads and analogue phones to VoIP.
Nowadays, a slow internet is not just an “annoyance” or a hindrance to growth, it’s a complete opt-out of the advancement of civilization.
As NowLebanon pointed out, March 14 is now in the opposition and there can no longer be excuses for delays in advancing infrastructure projects. If March 14 plays its cards right (“The world’s slowest internet” can be a strong political accusation), we might all in the end benefit.
