Things You Cannot Buy For 5000 LL

My friends over at +961 and Blog Baladi are writing about things you can buy using the 5000 LL people have saved for each 20 Liters of fuel at the new government prices.

While the posts are funny and interesting, the fact is that the government reducing the fuel prices when the international market price is rising is a bad thing.

But for the sake of playing along, here are 5 things you cannot buy for 5000 LL:

• The reduction in traffic that would have resulted from more expensive fuel
• A reduction of Lebanon’s environmental footprint. More expensive fuel would have encouraged people to car-pool and use public transportation
• A reduction in Lebanon’s budget deficit. Did you know that the government is borrowing money to pay the extra 5000 LL that you’ll use to buy Bonjus boxes and Bourj Hammoud DVDs?
• A future increase in Lebanese taxes. Something has to be done to pay back the Lebanese government’s debt, don’t you think?
• A deterioration in your health. The result of eating too many mana2ish from Ghalayini..
