Berri Sucks Up To Aoun

March 22, 2011 · Mustapha Hamoui

Aoun’s intransigence is beginning to pay dividends:

Speaker Nabih Berri said in an interview with As-Safir newspaper published Tuesday that he will support Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun in confronting corruption […] “Many will be surprised with the ferocity that I will show once the battle [to fight corruption] begins.”

In Lebanese political parlance, “fighting corruption” when mentioned in March 8 circles is code for “purging Hariri elements from the government”.

In essence Mr. Berri is trying to gain Aoun’s favor because a) he’s very impatient with the slow formation of the government and b) He has the weakest political position among the March 8 parties because he doesn’t add anything to the table..
