Here’s Why I’m Not Commenting On Wikileaks

March 22, 2011 · Mustapha Hamoui

As you noticed, I haven’t been commenting about the latest wikileaks revelations, except — like in my previous post — when gossipy details emerge.

To me the reason is simple: The cables are cancelling each other out. After you read them all, you come to the conclusion that everyone hated everyone else in Lebanon, whether they were allies or foes. And that we already knew.

The details are very interesting and revealing, but to treat the wikileaks story like a a game-changer would be a rookie mistake. As the latest cables have shown, both Mr. Aoun’s allies and Mr. Jumblat harbored ill will towards Hezbollah, their present ally.

Mr. Nasrallah has threatened legal action based on the cables. But to exclude his allies (whom he needs very much today) would expose him to charges of cherry picking and hypocrisy. So expect the talk of such action to die down quietly .

That doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t enjoy the gossip though..
