❊ In Defense Of Lebanese Politicians

March 22, 2011 · Mustapha Hamoui

Advocating for the Lebanese devils…

On the face of it, the banner above (source) is a cry of disgust against Lebanese politicians who, evidently, are hated by everyone. That sounds fair enough, as there is probably a case that can be made for why every single one of the pictured above is corrupt, out of touch and probably a prick.

There’s only one problem though: The Lebanese people elected those people in free elections. Each and every one of the politicians on that posters has tens of thousands of real admirers who took the trouble of standing in line to vote for him (no ‘her’ unfortunately). We can dismiss this as vote buying, but that is the naive thinking of those who have never attended political rallies of leaders who are genuinely admired.

Many Lebanese agree with the general statement: “Lebanese politicians are bad”. But when you ask them about the ones they voted for, the attitudes change. In fact everyone can come up with reasons why their own favorite politicians are noble, generous and courageous in standing up for their rights.

Those demonstrating today against “all politicians” will eventually have to vote for their own politicians, those who represent their own aspirations. Newsflash: Everyone else will hate them too.

The poster above, in a way, is a call for tyranny. One group of unelected Lebanese have decided that the elected representatives of the people do not have proper moral standing to lead. They have decided that they should pack up and leave, because “the people” (those who voted for them) supposedly want them to go. If that is not tyranny, I don’t know what tyranny is..
