“substantive new elements”

May 6, 2011 · Mustapha Hamoui

Special Tribunal for Lebanon Press Release:

The Prosecutor of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon, Daniel A. Bellemare, filed today an amended indictment, replacing the indictment of 11 March 2011, to include substantive new elements unavailable until recently.

So here’s what I think happened: Someone in the Syrian higher echelons is freaking out, either because he senses that the regime won’t last or because he feels threatened by the regime for supporting the demonstrators. Either way, that person could have struck a bargain with the STL exchanging valuable information for a witness protection program.

This is getting interesting. The question is: Is the STL waiting for the Syria storm to pass? Or is its work completely unrelated to events in that country?
