Sending Money To Hezbollah Is Getting Harder

May 25, 2011 · Mustapha Hamoui

Witness this story of Hor and Amira Akl who were caught by the FBI trying to send money to Hezbollah. This is the part of the news that interests me most:

the Akls were seen inside their home bundling a portion of the money in plastic wrap and duct tape to prepare it for concealment.

I found this interesting because it’s testimony to the effectiveness of scrutinizing banks and bank transfers, or what is referred to in the jargon as the money trail. The couple found it easier to bundle the cash up and embed it in second hand cars shipping to Lebanon than use the traditional way of wiring the money to Lebanese companies that act as secret commercial fronts for Hezbollah (companies that some Lebanese banks happily deal with)

I could be reading too much into this. Maybe the Akls just wanted to save on the transfer fees or they are just more comfortable with the non-traceability of cash. In any case, they got caught.
