This essential post by “an American in Syria” at Landis’ blog provides very good insight into the societal aspect of the unrest in Syria. The author is friends with a Sunni family, an Alawi family and a Shiaa family and in his (I’m assuming its a he) individual conversations with them paints a disconcerting portrait of an unravelling Syrian society. It’s like watching one of those movies where the main story is repeated several times, each time from the point of view of a different protagonist.
