Second Thoughts

June 1, 2011 · Mustapha Hamoui

Remember the pledge by Hamas and Hezbollah and the Palestinian factions to hold massive demonstrations on June 5th at the Israeli borders to send the message that the Palestinian people want to go back to the 1948 borders?

Remember how this got pundits all worked up about non-violence and the power of Palestinian crowds to overflow Israel from all sides? About how the rules are now different with the Arab spring and people power?

Well, apparently all that was a storm in a teacup:

A Hamas Movement representative said on Wednesday that there is “no final decision” regarding the anti-Israel rally that might be held in Lebanon on Sunday to mark the 44th anniversary of the Six Day War, during which Israel seized its Arab eastern sector.

This is the kind of talk Hamas makes when it loses the cover of its sponsors. I think they’ll now hold a symbolic march, somewhere far from the border (but not so far that they’ll lose face) and then go back home..

Update: It seems they were warned by the Lebanese army not to get close to the border..
