Am I Offending Christians ?

June 4, 2011 · Mustapha Hamoui

I just noticed that I recently wrote two posts that are critical of the Maronite religious establishment. One reader even wrote this to me:

You know from my comments that on 95% of subjects I’m with you, but on some occasions, for some reason that is beyond my understanding, you play the sectarian card against Christians.

I want to assure Christian readers that I hold no grudge against Christians. My opinions are generally anti-clerical and I don’t like the mixing of religion with politics. It was just a coincidence that I wrote two consecutive posts that can be seen as attacks on the Maronite Patriarch (who is being particularly active because he’s new).

People in Lebanon are too polite when it comes to clergy. I had to find the news about the banning of Lady Gaga from an American blogger who referenced a British tabloid article. Why? Because Lebanese news sources are too polite to publicly question the clergy’s decisions, even if they cause international embarrassment. I hope that by being a bit harsh, I’m helping out in filling a void..
