What Does the Future Movement Stand For?
October 1, 2011 · Mustapha Hamoui
I couldn’t have said it any better than Michael Young:
Many sympathizers wonder what Hariri actually stands for. Who did they mobilize to elect in the 2009 elections? No answer has come from the Future Movement, which has morphed into something of an annoying jack-in-the-box — popping its head up episodically to deliver some statement or barb against Prime Minister Najib Mikati.
What’s worse is Future TV’s news bulletins, which have turned into a nauseating combination of childish bickering with M.P Aoun and a continuous stream of low-quality demonstration videos from Syria. They have thrown all pretenses of objectivity and centrism to the wind.
I still believe that they do stand for something, namely the primacy of the state and its institutions, a free market economy and the disarmament of Hezbollah. If only they could rise above their petty emotions and calmly strategize for the long term.
