Why Vote For Jeita?

Blogger Rania on the motives of some Lebanese in voting for Jeita as a new world wonder:

to vote for Jeita just because we are Lebanese is … national chauvinism. Superficial nationalism.

I agree in theory with her logic (that you should have an informed vote, not a nationalistic one), but I’d like to take a less harsh view on those who do vote nationalistically.

People who are voting for Jeita are like people who watch a movie, think it’s great and start recommending it enthusiastically to everyone they know. They’re not being irrational because in their minds they are really convinced that if you saw that movie, you’ll like it too.

They might not have seen all the great movies out there. They might not know what the criteria are for a really great movie. But it’s perfectly okay for them to enthusiastically spread the word..
