Dictators and Legacies

October 21, 2011 · Mustapha Hamoui

As I was listening to the news of Gaddafi’s demise yesterday, my mind wandered to the legacy he will leave behind..

The man ruled the country for 40 years, amassed wealth, stature and glory. He built castles, named schools, hospitals and roads after himself. He made up a ruling philosophy that he forced down his people’s throats. He was the king of kings, the big almighty leader who spread fear and munificence onto his serfs. He had it all…

And yet, he ended up as bloody, humiliated corpse that was tossed around bsery the very people whom he traumatized.

His Legacy? His name and his photos, like those of Mubarak and Ben Ali, will be erased from sight and memories. One day will come where we will strive to explain to our grand children who Gaddafi was.. Like those other tyrants whose names do not deserve a glorious posterity, he will be reduced to a footnote in history..
