Did Jumblat Get $150 Million from Qatar to Switch Allegiance?
January 5, 2012 · Mustapha Hamoui
Hezbollah sources are spreading the news that the Chouf MP left his alliance with Hezbollah because of Qatari munificence:
Hezbollah sources revealed from information it obtained that the Mukhtara leader (Jumblat) received from the Qataris a cash amount of $150 Million to take a hardline and inflammatory position against the Assad regime, which angered Hezbollah and led to a new iciness in the relationship between the party and Jumblat
Even if that is true, saying that Walid Jumblat switched sides because he took money is an insult to all watchers of Lebanese politics. The iron law of Lebanese politics is that Walid Jumblat picks the winning side, not the richer side. Or else he would have never have left the Saudis and Americans in the first place..
