How Buildings Crumble
January 25, 2012 · Mustapha Hamoui
In case you’re wondering about the technical process of deterioration:
When buildings aren’t maintained small cracks from settling, and wear from weather and use turn into deep cuts and major holes. If decay reaches that stage concrete will oxidize and start falling away, revealing the metal core underneath. Once the steel rebar is exposed the whole framework of a building can begin to rust, it’s a slow process that’s difficult to stop and can cause major damage as the rust spreads.
In other words, it’s a visible process that gives a lot of warning signs before it happens.
